Liverpool will head to the Stade Velodrome high on confidence after claiming a memorable 2-1 victory over arch-rivals United on Saturday.
But Benitez is wary of his team losing focus and insisted they must hone their attention on l'OM or risk another rocky start to their European campaign.
"We have been talking with the players and clearly we need to forget about that game and think about Marseille," he told the club's official website. "This is a different team in a different competition and it will be difficult.
"Obviously we have taken confidence from it but it's important not to think about other games, just this one."
Stronger
Marseille and Liverpool met during the group stage of last season's competition. The French giants failed to reach the knockout rounds despite tabling a shock 1-0 win at Anfield that left the Reds in trouble early on.
Eric Gerets' side are also in good form, having maintained their unbeaten run with a 1-1 draw at Bordeaux that sees them sit second in Ligue 1.
And Benitez believes l'OM, who recruited the likes of Bakary Kone and Hatem Ben Arfa during the summer, are a much better side than they were this time last year.
"Marseille are a good side and I think they are stronger than when we met them last season," he said.
"I heard people saying they weren't as good, but in terms of the team I think they are better. They are well organised, they know what to do and they can change systems.
"We know we are playing well but the Champions League is different so we will have to see."
Little By Little
Nonetheless, Benitez is confident of leaving the south of France with three points, although he realises his side must perform very well indeed to produce a replica of last season's 4-0 triumph.
"We have a good enough team for winning in Marseille," the Spaniard added. "It's too early to talk about other trophies.
"We're pleased with the win over United, it's good for our confidence, but we have to make sure we stay focused and concentrate on the next game. Little by little we can think of talking about other things."
