Carrick out for a month with metatarsal misery

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has been ruled out for four to six weeks after breaking a bone in his foot.

Carrick suffered the injury during the 2-1 defeat at Liverpool on Saturday and it means the player will miss important games for Manchester United as well as England's World Cup qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Belarus.

It is the latest injury in a stuttering start to the season for the former West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur player who has played just fewer than 100 minutes so far this campaign and has gone off injured on both his starts.

The 27-year-old will definitely miss Champions League games against Villarreal and Aab, and the Premier League matches against Chelsea, Bolton, Blackburn and West Brom. United also have a Carling Cup date against Middlesbrough.

The club will hope Carrick's recovery goes to plan and he doesn't suffer the same fate as Liverpool's Daniel Agger, who befell the metatarsal injury at the same time last season and didn't kick another ball that term.
