Walcott Buzzing After Andorra Exploits

Walcott was perhaps a surprise starter in Saturday's World Cup qualifier in Barcelona, winning out against the likes of David Beckham, David Bentley and Joe Cole.

The Arsenal youngster did not disappoint, displaying his pace and guile to excellent effect as he sliced open Andorra's deep-lying defence on several occasions.

It was Walcott's first competitive start for the Three Lions, and he is thrilled Fabio Capello gave him a chance in such an important game.

Brilliant

“I’ve had a lot of experience at senior level and not had that opportunity to play. This time the boss gave me the opportunity and it was brilliant,” he told the press.

“The manager wanted me to get at the left-back from the start. Show what you can do and then they’re scared of you throughout the whole game.

“That’s what I did and it was a good performance. I got battered but I always get battered. I’m used to it and it doesn’t bother me at all.”

Walcott's efforts were made all the more impressive by Andorra's extremely defensive tactics and the fact Stewart Downing made no headway whatsoever on the opposite flank.

The 19-year-old is high on confidence after a promising start to the Premier League season and is champing at the bit ahead of  Wednesday's blockbuster against Croatia.

Buzzing

“Sometimes it’s difficult when you play a team that leaves no space behind, especially when my game is based on getting in behind defenders,” Walcott continued.

“But the confidence is there now. I’ve started every game this season for Arsenal, bar one, and I feel I’ve so much confidence.

“I’m training well and, when you are training well, your confidence flows. It is just instinct really.

“I feel great. I’m buzzing at the moment. I’m flying. I’m looking forward to it. I just cannot wait for Wednesday.”
