Flamengo hopeful of Ronaldo signature

Flamengo have reiterated their desire to sign Ronaldo following reports linking the former Brazil international with Manchester City.

Ronaldo, a free agent after being released by AC Milan at the end of last season, has been rehabilitating from a serious knee injury with Flamengo, who have made no secret of their desire to sign the Rio native once he has returned to full fitness. 'There is no future without a present,' Flamengo vice-president Kleber Leite said of Ronaldo's rehab. 'Ronaldo must get his life back, but from them onwards we'll obviously be interested in retaining him. 'The red-and-black carpet is ready for him.' Ronaldo was hurt playing for Milan against Livorno in February, and his contract with the Rossoneri expired in June. Soon after the injury, he returned to Brazil for treatment, and Flamengo have opened their doors to the three-time FIFA World Player of the Year with one eye on signing him.

Ronaldo is now working with Flamengo and Brazil team doctor Jose Luiz Runco as he begins the final stage of his rehab. 'We have already said it - our home is his home,' Leite said. 'All of the Flamengo organisation and staff are at his disposal.' It is expected to be between two and three months before the two-time World Cup winner is ready to return to action.
